What’s a Japa Diary?

“Japa” (/jɑːkpə/) is a Nigerian slang term that has gained widespread usage among Nigerian youths and in popular culture. In Yoruba, Japa loosely translates to "run away" or "escape." - Wikipedia.

Japa Diary is a chronicle of the experiences of two Nigerian guys trying to become global citizens in a world that doesn’t exactly make it easy for Nigerians.

It started out as WhatsApp banter, but as our journeys have progressed, we figured it might be a good idea to document the lessons we were learning in public for the benefit of other people who are asking the same questions we had and continue to look for answers to.

Our first diary entries are the best place to start and give you a sense of what we’re trying to do with this newsletter. If you really want to, you can read the entire diary archive in chronology by starting with those two posts.

  1. Why am I (still) here? - Adim

  2. The inciting incident - Bankole
